Chamber announces contest to design billboards for Highway 61 construction

From the Cook County Chamber of Commerce - February 17, 2020

Over the next two summers of construction on Highway 61 through Grand Marais, two billboards east of Grand Marai have been made available to send visitors coming from that direction a positive message. The Chamber thanks Mark Shackleton, owner of the Subway sandwich shop, and Melodee and Dan Riddle, owners of the Blue Water cafe, for making the billboard space available.

Chamber Executive Director Jim Boyd said "We want to put up funny, positive messages that nod to the construction but encourage folks coming from Canada to stop in Grand Marais."

"The billboards most likely will still carry the logo of Subway and Blue Water, so we want to ensure nothing would reflect badly on either restaurant, and we will ensure the final versions pass muster with the restaurant owners." Boyd continued, "Please, nothing vulgar. But we want something that definitely tickles people and endears Grand Marais to them."

Boyd said one early suggestion, for example, for the Blue Water billboard: "No construction grit in our pancakes! Free rock skipping, too!"

Boyd commented, "Kinda lame, eh? Thus this contest".

A winner is needed by April 1. The one chosen will receive a $50 gift certificate to a Grand Marais restaurant of the winner's choice.

So be creative and cute, team up if you want, and send your entries via email to [email protected]
