This partnership was just finalized last week. UW-Superior owns the building, which is near Barker's Island. The University of Wisconsin-Madison administers the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Dr. Erika Washburn explained that the agency is an important partner already, so this made perfect sense. She's the director of the reserve. "The Coast Guard supports everything we do. They are there for us, always on call to help. If they need a place to muster their staff when responding to a disaster, we're happy to offer this facility."

She added there's a parking lot right out front for pulling a trailer, and a secure dock and water access. 

In a statement, the Marine Safety Unit Duluth's Commanding Officer, Commander Frances Smith, said, "The partnership that has been created between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is extremely important, and is one that will increase the Coast Guard's ability to quikcly re-constitute following a large-scale disaster."
