With warmer temperatures, more people are flocking to our beautiful Lake Superior, but city officials are asking the public not to swim this weekend.  According to a press release from the Duluth Parks and Recreation staff, water temperatures are still being recorded under 40 degrees along Park Point.

The National Center for Cold Water Safety categorizes water under 40 degrees as "Immediately life-threatening."

Temperatures in Duluth are being forecasted in the high 70s to low 80s on Saturday. Lake Superior will be calling with temperatures that warm. 

“We are excited that summer is finally upon us, but the risks of swimming in dangerously cold water are serious, so we ask that all beachgoers be safe, and not swim in the lake until water temperatureswarm up,” Parks Manager, Jessica Peterson said in the release.

According to Interim Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj, “When water temperatures are below 40 degrees, hypothermia symptoms occur in minutes.”

City staff says the Park Point Beach House will be open to the public starting on Monday, June 10 and lifeguards will be on duty on the beach once water temperatures rise into the 40’s.
