According to the Minnesota Center for Fiscal Excellence, a nonpartisan organization based in the Twin Cities, there are a number of ways to interpret the cost of local government per person in each of the state’s 87 counties. On the surface, some figures regarding this study can seem alarming for Cook County residents.

However, a closer look at the numbers and factoring in exported taxes, as well as local property taxes minus exported cabin taxes and property tax refunds reveals the cost of local government is not excessive in Cook County. In fact, it is below the state average.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs speaks with Aaron Twait from the Minnesota Center for Fiscal Excellence about the cost of local government for Cook County residents.
