At the end of 2022, Grand Marais's First and Second Thrift Store announced they would be closing temporarily and re-opening in a new location - which they found in the old Birchbark Gifts building.

Boreal Community Media received an update this week from Ann Marie Mershon, one of First and Second's store managers, about when they will start accepting donations and a potential date for opening.

"We finally have a schedule (of sorts)," Mershon said.

There will be a large move on Saturday, to remove some items from their current storage space. Fortunately, they have a full crew of people willing to help.

According to Mershon, on Monday, June 19, "A team of volunteers will be installing storage shelves in the back room."

On Tuesday, volunteers will start organizing merchandise left over from 2022.

"We plan to start taking donations on Wednesday, June 21st through Saturday, July 1st,  from 10 to 4 each day," she said. The new location is at 11 1st Ave W, in downtown Grand Marais. In local speak, it's just "down" from North Point Youth, and across from Joy & Co, The Big Lake, and Gunflint Mercantile.

As for an opening day, Mershon shared that the organization is hoping July 1st will be a soft opening, with a grand opening shortly after that, once everything is completed.

"We’re GREATLY appreciative of all the people who have supported us in this move: Mike Prom and Voyageur Brewing Company, James Fouldes with Border Giant, who has let us use Bennie’s Garage to store our shelves and fixtures, Shoshanna Matney, who let us use her huge garage to store two trailers of merchandise and wood shelving, the Cook County Council on Aging, who helped guide us through this transition, and SCORES of volunteers who have helped with the move," she added.
