Swinging Bridge Temporarily Closed - High River Level Alert

We have closed the Swinging Bridge on 4/15/23 for safety, based on proximity of flow to the decking. Although overall flow is 2 feet from the decking, the churning water is frequently reaching higher with tree trunks and ice chunks periodically passing below. Flows are likely to peak with the next day. At this point, we do not anticipate damage to the structure. The bridge will reopen when no flows are measured above the 2 foot below the deck marking point.

The St. Louis River has opened and moving at a very fast flow. Rushing water may be exciting to look at but remember to use caution and common sense when visiting the park. Stay away from river edges to avoid accidentally slipping into the fast moving water. Logs and ice chunks are floating in the river which could pop up and hit the Swinging Bridge. Check current river levels at the "Thomson Dam data" link below in the "Learn More About the Park" section. For reference, typical spring peaks around 20,000 cfs which we have already surpassed. The record level set in 2012 topped out at 55,000 cfs.

Storm-Related Conditions

The park has been significantly impacted by wet snowfall which is making clearing and access difficult. Trails and campsites are currently impacted by trees bending over or on the route and branches periodically break and fall with weight. The park crew has lots and access to available campsites and cabins clear. Trail impacts from this storm will be extensive and it will take some time to remove obstructions. The office lot and River Inn, Oldenburg Point and Grand Portage lots are cleared and open and access to cabins and some sites is now clear. If you visit the park, the safest areas are those that are open without overhead trees.
