The process of selecting the jury for the state trial of two former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd’s murder will get underway Monday morning.

Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death.

The former officers were already tried and convicted in federal court, as was fellow former officer Thomas Lane, who opted to plead guilty to the state charges rather than join Thao and Kueng at trial. Former officer Derek Chauvin was convicted in state court and pleaded guilty to the federal charges he faced for Floyd’s death.

Thao and Kueng rejected a final plea offer in August that would’ve allowed them to avoid the state trial and serve their sentences at the same time as their federal sentences.

Earlier this month, their attorneys and the state’s met with Judge Peter Cahill — who also presided over Chauvin’s trial — and laid the ground rules for this trial.

During jury selection, each side will be able to question potential jurors, who’ve also already filled out a questionnaire. Each side then has a limited number of strikes they can use to disqualify jurors who aren’t already dismissed by the judge for another reason.

Twelve jurors will hear the case but at least a couple of alternates are expected to be chosen during the selection process so they’re available in case any jurors would need to be dismissed during the trial.

Jury selection will begin at 9 a.m. Monday and is likely to take multiple days.
