Gov. Tim Walz has been tapped to co-chair President Joe Biden's Council of Governors.

The council, which consists of 10 bipartisan governors, advises the secretaries of defense and homeland security, as well as the White House Homeland Security Council, on matters related to the National Guard. Walz will co-chair the council with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

"I am honored to be appointed as co-chair to lead this bipartisan group of governors to continue to strengthen the state-federal partnership on matters related to the National Guard and civil support missions," Walz said in a statement. "This has been an historic year. In addition to their federal mission, the National Guard was critical in responding to civil unrest and helping our nation fight COVID-19. I look forward to continuing to work with other governors and our federal partners to support the National Guard and advise on matters related to homeland defense and civil support."

Walz served in the Army National Guard for nearly 25 years.

The other members of the council are Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Delaware Gov. John Carney, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott and Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon.
