Tom Peterson, founder of Superior Hiking Trail, has passed away

The man who paved the way for the Superior Hiking Trail has died.

Thomas L. Peterson, passed away at his home Tuesday, June 22.

He was 76 years old.

Besides creating one of the most popular 200 plus mile hiking trails in the area, Tom taught at UMD, worked for the DNR, and was the Silver Creek Township Supervisor for many years.

His family says he was a prolific reader who also enjoyed gardening, hiking, and visiting the Two Harbors Dog Park.

His funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 12, in Two Harbors.

Peterson’s family says they would love it if you planted a tree in his memory.
