If you happen to find a rock decorated with words of encouragement laying around the Twin Ports, it is not by mistake!

Efforts to spread positivity through rocks have grown over time and a Northland man recently created a Facebook group to extend these efforts further.

John D’Auria of Superior said it was inspired by a global project called the Kindness Rock Project.

“Back in 2005, one girl painted an inspirational message on a rock and put it on a beach in Cape Cod and another girl found it and that’s kind of how it all started,” D’Auria said.

In his group, 1 Life Rocks, D'Auria encourages families and friends to paint rocks with positive messages on them and then leave them around Duluth and Superior.

“They can spend time together, they can bond over it, they can come up with ideas and paint the rocks with inspirational messages,” D’Auria said.

If you find a rock and end up keeping it, D’Auria said you are encouraged to leave another rock someplace next time you are out and about.

“It’s a positive thing to collect for both kids and parents” D’Auria said. “I found one recently all the way up by the gunflint trail in Grand Marais and I brought it all the way back here and relocated it in Superior.”

According to D’Auria, there are a couple of other similar groups in the area, including one in Proctor called Northern Minnesota Rocks and one in Superior called Twin Port Rocks.

“It’s nice to know that we have at least three groups in the area,” D’Auria said. “I think it’s a really good thing.”
