Mr. D's is gearing up for the weekend. "Business is on the up swing. We're getting more customers back, and people are feeling more comfortable," shared Joe Terwey, the manager.

With stimulus payments on their way, it could mean more meal and drink orders.

Monica Haynes, Director of UMD's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said she thinks this round of stimulus payments is going to have a significant impact. "A lot of that money is going to go right back into the economy. Especially for those with lower incomes or who lost their jobs over the past year."

She said there's also funding available for businesses like restaurants and bars to balance out the big losses from 2020.

Terwey said they've applied for PPP and grants from the state before, and they would welcome additional help.

Over in the DeWitz-Seitz building in Canal Park, business was brisk at Two & Co. "I'm feeling optimistic about the upcoming season," shared Bill Miller, the owner.

He's seeing more people venture out.

"I hear that almost daily. I haven't been here in months, or it's good to be out, or I'm glad you're here," he said. "It's nice."

He's like you to stop in and pick up something for spring and summer.

Also in the stimulus package is additional benefits for unemployment through September, according to Elena Foshay with Workforce Development. "So is the additional $300 a week top off," she said.

At the peak of the pandemic, there were 15,000 people filing for unemployment in St. Louis County. Now that number is about 3,500.

Still, she said now is a good time to reach out if you need help with your resume or interview skills.

The city of Duluth is getting $60 million dollars. Mayor Emily Larson said they are working on the details about where the money will be allocated, but said there would be public discussion about it.
