BCA Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Mountain Iron

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the deputies who discharged their firearms during an officer involved shooting incident on December 5 in Mountain Iron.
  • Deputy Ryan Smith has been with the St. Louis County Sheriff Office for 11 years.
  • Deputy Matt Tomsich has been with the St. Louis County Sheriff Office for 12 years.

Both deputies Tomsich and Smith have declined to be interviewed by BCA agents. Attorneys for the deputies provided unsolicited written reports from the officers to the BCA on Tuesday. Both deputies are on standard administrative leave.

In addition, the Midwest Medical Examiner has confirmed the identity of the man who died during the incident. Estavon Dominick Elioff, 19, of Virginia, died of multiple gunshot wounds.

St. Louis County sheriff’s deputies do not wear body cameras and dash cameras did not capture the incident. There were no other witnesses to the incident.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered a knife from the scene.

The BCA’s investigation of the incident is active and ongoing. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will provide its findings without recommendation to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
