Understanding Equity

Presented via Zoom October 20 | 5:30pm-7:30pm

Cost: $20 *Scholarships Available

Presenter: Nina McCune, Associate Professor of History at BRCC Registration: www.mycche.org | 218-387-3411 | [email protected]

We live in bleak times and struggle with what can seem like insurmountable problems. One of the major issues in our national discourse is equity - a desirable status - but what is equity, anyway? One could say there is a solid understanding of what "equality" is - it is relatively easy to measure and observe. But what of equity? How do we understand what equity is, how it operates, and how we measure it? And, what part of our public life should be audited for equity? Please join us for a discussion of a framework that could be employed in a variety of settings to ensure all people have access and opportunity to engage the resources, institutions, and outcomes necessary for equity.

Presenter: Nina McCune is an Associate Professor of American History at Baton Rouge Community College, where she also serves as Chair of General Education. In this role, she implemented an Equity Institute, where faculty improve equity outcomes at this Predominantly Black Institution (a Title III Minority Serving Institution). Nina is completing her dissertation at Northwestern State University on educational equity, and has worked in various research and educational capacities for social justice in the United States and in Germany. She holds degrees from the University of Chicago and has taught in Chicago and New York.
