The journey toward transformation in our communities begins with a firm understanding of how adversity and toxic stress, along with the underlying historical and intergenerational traumas, are at the root of many of the disparities in health and social outcomes we are seeing today.

This presentation will introduce the concepts of Historical Trauma and Epigenetics from the American Indian perspective and help us begin to uncover the ongoing impact on our children, families, communities and ourselves. We can reflect on our own roles in coming along side our neighbors to create a shift in our relationships and community culture that will best support positive outcomes, resilience, and healing for today’s children as well as generations to come.

Topics will include:

--A brief overview of Toxic Stress and Adaptations in Response to Trauma

--Epigenetic Inheritance

--How Our Indigenous Communities in Minnesota have been impacted by our combined histories

--Shifting our practices and perspective to support overcoming

Presenter: Linsey McMurrin is a citizen of the Leech Lake Nation of Ojibwe, and is Director of Prevention Initiatives & Tribal Projects for Minnesota Communities Caring for Children. She also works as a Prevention Specialist with Peacemaker Resources, assisting with cultural responsiveness in the Bemidji community and beyond. Linsey is a strong advocate of social justice and community driven work, and believes that the development of cultural, social, and emotional competencies is integral to our well-being and ongoing success – as individuals, families, and communities
