Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center Open for the Season -July 10

Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center Open for the Season - July 10

Due to COVID-19 concerns the Chik-Wauk buildings will not open on the scheduled date of Memorial Weekend.

The Gunflint Trail Historical Society feels it is necessary for the health of the volunteers, staff, and visitors that frequent the campus to postpone the opening until a later date in July. More up to date information can be found on the Chik-Wauk website, www.chikwauk.com.

The hiking trails are open at this time but we ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines outdoors. CDC states to avoid groups larger than 10 and stay 6 feet apart on the trails to help slow the spread of COVID-19. It’s important for the health of everyone during this time. You may access the trails by parking your vehicle out by the main gate, please do not block the driveway. There will be hiking trail maps provided by the gate.

Thank you for your continued support through these unprecedented times. It will be a different season for Chik-Wauk but we hope you will come back and visit us again.

The temporary exhibit for 2019 was such a great topic it was requested to keep it up for another season. The exhibit was a story of two men that had lived on the Gunflint Trail, Tommy Banks and Billy Needham. Tommy Banks, a bootlegger and gangster from Minneapolis was active during the days of prohibition. Billy Needham lived on Bearskin and Hungry Jack Lake and became known for his diamond willow lodge furniture and hand drawn maps. The two men became friends on the shores of Hungry Jack Lake. On loan from Mary and Gary Connell, who own Tommy Banks cabin that was built in the 1930's. The Connell's have compiled newspaper articles, photographs, and artifacts from the life of Tommy Banks and his cabin caretaker, Billy Needham. Their grandson John Hutchinson, has spent much time at his grandparent’s cabin on Hungry Jack Lake learning about the gangster Tommy Banks and his close friend Billy Needham.

When you are able to visit, the Gunflint Trail Historical Society will do everything possible to make your visit to the Campus enjoyable and secure.
