In 1872, the Minnesota Legislature established the Minnesota Geologic and Natural History Survey under the auspices of the University of Minnesota. For the next 5 decades, researchers recorded and documented Minnesota’s natural resources, plant life, and animal varieties. The University of Minnesota Archives is home to these records including documents, field notebooks, and photographs. Covering all areas of Minnesota, including the North Shore, these materials provide today’s researchers and citizen scientists the ability to trace native species and compare with today’s environmental data. This presentation will provide a background on the University of Minnesota Archives, the history and outcomes of the Minnesota Geologic and Natural History Survey, and an opportunity to digitally view the field notebooks and photographs created 100+ years ago. Erik Moore is the University Archivist for the University of Minnesota. He is also Co-Director of the University Digital Conservancy, Minnesota's institutional repository.
