Green New Deal Town Hall

Climate Change / Community / SunriseMovement.org

Invitation to Green New Deal Town Hall.  Everyone is invited to a Green New Deal Town Hall on Earth Day at the Community Center at 7 p.m. This event is part of a cross-county tour of 50 major cities and 100-plus town halls in communities like Grand Marais, to explain the Green New Deal and how it can quickly move the country away from fossil fuel pollution. Green New Deal is a blueprint for stopping climate change and creating millions of new jobs in the process. The tours are sponsored by Sunrise Movement, a grass roots organization of young people committed to a green economy and a sustainable future for the planet and inspired by the international youth movement led by Greta Thunberg. The Sunrise presentation of slides and video clips will focus on how communities can create green new jobs to transition the economy away from fossil fuels and into green energy businesses which can also help preserve our water, soil and forests. Many elders in Cook County may remember the Civilian Conservation Corps, which is a good example of how a work force can be mobilized to repair existing and build new infrastructure. At our event, people from Cook County will talk about how they are organizing local efforts to reduce carbon emissions rapidly within the next 10 years. Speakers will be outlining local efforts to reduce emissions already underway. Jay Arrowsmith –DeCoux will explain the city of Grand Marais’ draft Climate Action Plan; other speakers will describe the Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP), the Citizens’ Climate Lobby plan for Carbon Tax and Dividend, and the ways Arrowhead Indivisible is working toward climate solutions. There will also be time for discussion. The Green New Deal plan to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs will look a little different everywhere, and this is our chance to talk about how our local economy might be part of a nationwide project. Please join us on Earth Day, April 22nd, at 7 p.m. at Cook County Community Center, 317 West 5th Street, Grand Marais. Contact info: Nancye Belding - [email protected]
