Join Valerie Marasco, Director of Cook County’s Office of Emergency Management & Public Information for an informational session on emergency prepareness. Her Department provides leadership and communications programs to promote informed, safer and prepared communities with the capacity to cope with hazards and disasters. Emergency Management protects communities by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to build, sustain, and improve the capability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters and public safety issues. Through coordinated strategic communications programs, the Public Information Office informs and engages citizens, staff and the media in public safety and county government operations. Ms Marasco, Chairs Cook County’s Emergency Preparedness Committee as well as the Cross-Border International Emergency Management Committee which brings together all emergency services from surrounding communities on both the Minnesota and Ontario sides of the Border. Prior to returning to her home state of Minnesota to join Cook County, she served as the PIO as part of Command Staff for the 11 years with the City of Thunder Bay Emergency Operations Control Group, and as the Supervisor of Corporate Communications for the City. She is one of only a few Public Information Officer and Media Relations trainers in Minnesota and delivers training in the North for the Department of Public Safety. Marasco also co-owned a private public relations and marketing firm, and has managed over 4,500 media issues in her career. She holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Communications and Spanish from the University of Minnesota Duluth and La Universidad de Guadalajara.
