Maple Competition at Lutsen SNA

Explore a beautiful Maple forest

The scenic Lutsen SNA is one of the largest known acreages of essentially undisturbed upland old-growth hardwood forest in the North Shore landscape area. Many individual trees are from 145 to 300 years old. Large diameter trees show old-growth forms, and large logs and snags that have fallen provide food and habitat for many small animals, fungi, lichens, insects, and new forest growth. Join Margie on an exploration of this beautiful forest. It takes about half an hour to hike into the SNA, but it’s well worth the trip! MEET IN THE PARKING LOT AT MOUNTAIN INN ON THE LUTSEN SKI HILL ROAD at 1 pm. Plan to wear hiking boots or good walking shoes, and bring water, snacks and a pair of binoculars if you have them. You should also be prepared for tick season with long pants and long socks that you can wear over your pant legs. Adventures await! Funding for this program is provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).
