Updated: Wind Advisory and Gale Warning issued for Cook County and Grand Portage beginning Tuesday, May 20

May 20 update:

The Wind Advisory has been extended to include all of Cook County and Grand Portage, as well as Lake County. Winds out of the east and northeast will be strong on Tuesday, and gradually weaken on Wednesday. Gusts between 35 and 50 mph are expected, especially in locations close to the north shore. The Wind Advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. 

A Gale Warning has been issued, with 6 to 8 foot waves expected in the Cook County and Grand Portage area. The Gale Warning is in effect until 1 a.m. 

A Red Flag Warning is also in effect for northern Cook County and Grand Portage between noon and 9 p.m. today. The MN DNR has banned any open burning. Fires in designated campfire rings are allowed but discouraged.

The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a Wind Advisory for southern Cook County, including the Tribal Lands of the Grand Portage Reservation. This advisory is in effect from 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 until 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21.

Winds out of the east at 15 to 25 mph are expected, with potential gusts reaching between 35 and 45 miles per hour.

These wind conditions may result in unsecured objects being blown around. Additionally, tree limbs could be blown down, which could lead to a few power outages in the affected area.

A Gale Watch is also in effect beginning Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 a.m. for NE winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt possible. Waves 7 to 10 feet are also possible.
