From Superior National Forest - May 8, 2025
The East Zone Fire Staff are planning to conduct the Bandit Prescribed Burn on Saturday, May 10th. This is on the Tofte District near Wilson Lake and is 92 acres of broadcast slash from a timber harvest completed in 2020. The weather forecast is ideal with favorable humidity, winds (NE to E), and temperature. The operations will use UAS ignitions along with hand ignitions.
There will be a Wildland Engine and multiple personnel, as well as, a dozer to assist. Expected fire behavior is low to moderate flame lengths in the 2-4 foot height with higher intensities in the jackpots of slash where flames could be as high as 18 feet. There are some residual leave island of trees and we can expect some isolated torching of fir/spruce. The operation is expected to last one day. Mop up and patrolling will occur for multiple days and will continue as needed until the burn is declared out.
As with most of our prescribed burns, there will be residual smoke, snags/trees that will continue smoldering for multiple days. The burn will not be left unattended until it is deemed safe from fire spreading beyond the unit boundaries.
