Cook County would like to address concerns about the Gunflint Trail bridge construction stoplights and how they may impact emergency vehicles. 

Delays at this intersection were discussed in detail by the Cook County Highway Department, Cook County Emergency Management and North Shore Health EMS during preconstruction, specifically the potential delay of an emergency vehicle. EMS crews were properly informed and educated about how to maneuver under these circumstances. All parties agreed that for safety purposes, the stoplights must be honored by all vehicles.  

Our medical, fire and emergency medical responders empathize with the stress a delay can cause but remind drivers to comply with the traffic signal for the safety of all drivers and their passengers. 

We ask all drivers to remain patient and honor traffic signals. These measures are in place to ensure the safety of everyone on the road, including those providing critical emergency services.
