From Superior National Forest - May 2, 2025
The East Zone Fire Staff are planning to do several wildlife opening prescribed burns. On Saturday, May 3rd we will burn Christmas Tree (6 ½ acres) and the Richey Lake (14 ½ acres) units on the Tofte District. These are located on the south end of Forest Road 346 (Richey Lake Road). Resources will include Module 71 and Module 21 with a UTV and Engine 622 (Total of 7 FFTs). These mostly consist of grasses with encroaching brush. There may be some single tree torching, but mostly a low to moderate surface fire. These two units will be burned back to back as they are right across the road from each other.
On Monday, May 5th the East Zone Fire Staff are planning to burn Plouff Creek Units 7 (8 acres) & 8 (5 acres) on the Tofte District. These are located on County Road 3 (Perent lake Road). Resources will include Module 21, Module 71, Engine 621 and Engine 671, and Baxter (total of 9 FFTs). These are Nabokov Blue Butterfly habitat burns that will be a low to moderate surface fire with some brush and spruce/fir encroachment. There may be some isolated torching. These units are across the road from one another and will be burned one at a time back to back.
As with all our prescribed burns, smoke may linger for a day or two after ignitions and there may a some trees that hold smoke for several days. The burns will not be left unattended until fire spread is no longer occurring and it is safe to leave. The units will be regularly patrolled until declared out.
