It may look like spring outside, with the warm April sunshine and melting snow, but winter is holding on.

Many areas in northeast Minnesota work up to temperatures below zero this morning. The coldest reading was at the Grand Marais Airport, where a temperature of -6°F was recorded.

And while that isn't super typical for this time of year, the National Weather Service in Duluth told Boreal Community Media that it isn't the coldest reading at that location in recent history. Since the weather station was installed at the Airport in 1996, there has been only one colder reading on this date. On April 8, 2018, a temperature of -8°F was recorded at that spot.

Temperatures are expected to warm gradually through the rest of the week.

Here is a list of some of the lowest temperatures across Cook County and Grand Portage the morning of April 8:
  • Grand Marais Airport: -6 F
  • Seagull Lake: -4 F
  • Grand Marais (near Hungry Jack Lodge): -2 F
  • Grand Marais (near Seagull Lake): 0 F
  • Grand Portage (Mineral Center): 1 F
  • Grand Portage: 9 F
