Original post:

A power outage within the city limits of Grand Marais, from Croftville to Fall River Falls, impacted many residents on one of the coldest mornings of the season (downtown Grand Marais was not affected). Temperatures along the shore were below zero, with windchill readings hovering around the up -20s to -30sF. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect until Tuesday at noon.

Here's what we know:

Many residents were without power for over an hour on Sunday morning. City officials were quickly alerted to the situation, and linemen were dispatched to address the issue. According to the City of Grand Marais in an email to affected residents and Boreal Community Media, the power outage was caused "due to excessive load on the system."

The city is asking residents to "limit their power use within reasonable limits where possible," including "turning off unnecessary lights and appliances," to help prevent additional outages. Making small adjustments to the electrical usage can help "stabilize the system," according to officials.

Power has intermittently begun coming back on in various parts of the city.

If you need emergency assistance, the city is asking residents to contact the county dispatcher at 218-387-3030.

The cold weather has resulted in some entities setting reduced hours or closing completely for the safety of their employees and guests. Learn more here.

We will continue to provide updated information as it becomes available.
