Welcome to the 2024 Boreal Community Media virtual non-profit highlight! In the past, Boreal Community Media hosted an event called Dessert to the Max to celebrate and recognize local non-profits and their incredible work for the community. The event typically coincided with the Minnesota-based celebration Give to the Max, hosted by GiveMN, an annual celebration and “giving holiday” to all non-profits across the state.

This year, instead of an in-person celebration, Boreal is virtually honoring and highlighting these organizations on Boreal.org

Today’s non-profit organization we’re highlighting is:

Name of your organization

Grand Marais Art Colony

Mission/Work

The Grand Marais Art Colony fosters the exploratory growth and experimental power of contemporary artists.

With the Boundary Waters to the north; Lake Superior is to the south. We explore visual arts in that liminal space between. We exist to advance the aesthetic inquiries and experimentations of artists. We are an artist-centered space offering residencies, studio sessions, and exhibitions. We are a welcoming community that supports risk-taking and self-discovery; we are an immersive gathering place where you can germinate and exchange ideas, inspirations and techniques.

We offer about 60 classes per year in 7 artistic mediums, host 60-70 regional and national artists through our Artist-in-Residence programs, serve the youth of Cook County with unique and creative programming, and host a number of signature events like the Grand Marais Art Festival.

Upcoming events

Our Summer class schedule will be released in January and members-only early enrollment will begin in mid-January.

A fun fact about the Grand Marais Art Colony

The Art Colony began in the summer of 1947 and in those 77 years our participants have used 28,105 paint brushes.

How someone can donate

We depend on small member donations and our artist-led community of supporters. We accept one-time donations and sustaining memberships begin at $5/month. Becoming a member comes with perks such as access to early enrollment in our summer classes, an invitation to show your work in our Muse member exhibition each fall, and more.
