With the arrival of fall and cooler weather along the north shore, the Grand Marais Film Society is back with another great season of programming. “We’ve worked hard to make this a sustainable organization, and we learned a lot from our first film season.” Said Tom Morse, one of the Film Society’s board members, “We’ve also been busy filing paperwork and making plans to ensure that this is a sustainable effort so that our community can enjoy films for years to come.” Morse shared that the Film Society is now officially a 501(c)(3) organization and is accepting applications for volunteers to help run screenings. The organization ended its first season solidly in the black and is making use of those funds to make improvements to the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
The first film of the 2024 season will be this Friday night, October 25th, at 7pm at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Like last year, licensing restrictions keep the Film Society from publishing the name of the movie in print - but it features a green haired ghost, a striped suit, and a pair of big city yuppies. The film is sponsored by the Cook County Co-Op, which the film society poster says is a “great place to tally your bananas,” another fun hint about the film.
New this year for the film society is offering season passes. “We wanted to offer folks an easy way to get their tickets for the whole season and it gives us more certainty for the year ahead,” said Tom. Film goers have the option of either purchasing a season ticket for $35 or become a “Film Patron” for $75 that includes a limited edition cap along with a modest donation to sustain the film society.
Tickets this year are also just $5, thanks to support from Visit Cook County that allowed the film society to lower prices this season.
