The University of Minnesota (UMN) Extension Master Gardener Program in Cook County is still accepting applications through October 1 for the 2025 Master Gardener volunteer program.

What exactly is the Master Gardener program?

The Cook County program has volunteers from all walks of life. Interns complete a “Core Course” in horticulture and share what they learn with others. They connect research-based horticulture resources from the University of Minnesota while educating adults or children through a variety of outreach programs and activities that address priorities that are important for the health and well-being of our communities such as clean water, pollinator protection, or growing foods.

Does one have to have a lot of gardening experience?

While it is useful to have some general gardening experience, a formal education in horticulture isn't necessary.  University of Minnesota Extension educators provide the horticulture training and resources to equip you. Having good communication skills and a desire to work with people is helpful, as well as a desire for life-long learning.

What is the process and cost for becoming a Master Gardener?

Our website has a lot of information about the process:  https://extension.umn.edu/master-gardener/become-master-gardener

Applications are due October 1st. The cost for the core course that is part of the first year of your participation in the program is $340, but don’t let cost be a barrier- scholarships are available!
