Many are jumping full swing into the season with the official start of fall on September 22 and the cooler weather. As part of the 52-Week Food Shelf Challenge (started by Donna and Orvis Lunke), Cook County residents and visitors have donated a different item each week since the beginning of the year. And now, it's time to start thinking ahead to the fall and winter holiday season.
According to Donna, "The Food Shelf does their main distribution the first week of the month, so in order to prepare for Thanksgiving Dinner, we have to start now and collect through October." Those who have been following along with the weekly challenge can expect to find upcoming requests for things like stuffing (this week), canned yams, cranberries, mashed potatoes, and gravy mix. (As a reminder, outdated items are not accepted.)
Each month, people can contribute a "bonus" item (there is always a need for paper products). For October, the "extra" is pickles and olives.
With food pickup sites at each of the town's main grocery stores, over 2492 items were collected in the first half of the year. These items are distributed between the Grand Marais and Grand Portage food shelves.
