Last month, Sydney’s Pizza and Frozen Custard restaurant was moved through downtown Grand Marais from its temporary location at (1st Ave W and Wisconsin Street) to the original location on Broadway Avenue. A small excavator moved the shipping container restaurant that was set on I-beam frames and wheels. A crowd of onlookers filled the surrounding sidewalks as the large structure seemed to maneuver easily down the road.

Sydney’s was founded and built by Bruce Block in 2001 and he has operated it ever since. A fire in April of 2023 destroyed much of the restaurant’s structure and the shipping container was built out last summer to temporarily cook and serve out of. Bruce is aiming to reopen sometime this month. Some menu changes will occur as they reopen. Block plans on having an expanded rooftop deck with excellent Lake Superior views. In the coming years, Block hopes to rebuild a permanent building, replacing the shipping containers.

Navigating over the curb was just one of the hurdles that the operation faced.
