Come learn more about Bill Hackett, a beloved bus driver for Cook County Schools.

A Boreal Community Media exclusive - June 8, 2024

Driving a bus for almost 20 years shows that you love what you do!  What is your favorite part of being a bus driver?

I started June of 2006 when my oldest grandson moved in with us. I said I would drive until he's graduated. That was 2010. But now I have 2 more grandkids in school yet. My favorite thing about driving is watching the kids faces as I tell them stories about their parents and grandparents.  Most are shocked that I know so many families. But I lived here in Grand Portage growing up.

What do you do for hobbies and fun when in your spare time?

Like many others I like to camp and fish.  Esther Lake is one of my favorite shores to fish from. I also cut and split my own firewood for the winters. My younger grandkids come help me now and I get to supervise!

Would you like to share a bit about your family members?  Kids?  Grandkids?  Pets?

My wife Carol and I will be married 58 years this coming November.  We have 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. 3 of our grandsons are Cook County alumni and we have 2 more graduating in the next few years.

What did you do for work before retirement?

After working for 17 years at Reserve Mining we moved our family to the cities like so many other Silver Bay people did.  I worked mechanics jobs and garbage disposal there. After 11 years my wife and I moved back home. I started driving bus for ISD 166 soon after.

What is your favorite part about living in Cook County?

I like the slower life style of the North Shore.  After being in the busy cities it's nice that a traffic jam is 2 cars meeting on the stone bridge at the same time!

What is the best advice that you were ever given and how did it affect you throughout your life?

My best advice came from my mother Harriet Walsh; she told me if you don't catch the biggest fish throw them all back!
