Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal Members, Cook County Community Members, and Courthouse Officials Gather for a Grand Portage Band Flag Dedication

On Friday, May 31st, 2024, the Cook County Courthouse was packed with people for the Grand Portage Flag Dedication event that began at 10 am. Courtroom officials, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribal members, and members of the Cook County community were present to celebrate and officiate the occasion. The importance of the flag dedication ceremony is to acknowledge that the Grand Portage Band is an inherent sovereign tribal nation and to respect and honor their legal system and self-governing authority. The Honorable Judge Steven B. Hanke of the Sixth Judicial District opened and facilitated the ceremony.
The flag dedication included the Grand Portage Honor Guard and the Stonebridge Singers Drum group. Agatha Armstrong, Vice Chairperson of the Grand Portage Tribal Council shared a few words with the community to honor the event. The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa flag will be permanently displayed in an honored place in the Courthouse alongside the State of Minnesota and the United States of America flag.

The Stonebridge Singers performed at the Cook County Courthouse during the Grand Portage Band flag dedication ceremony.
The Honorable Judge Steven. E Hanke closed out the Grand Portage flag dedication ceremony at the Cook County Courthouse.
The Honorable Judge Michael J. Cuzzo and Chief Judge Leslie E. Beiers attended the Grand Portage flag dedication ceremony.
The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa flag rests in its permanent place on the first floor of the Courthouse.
