Come learn more about Cherie James, one of the amazing staff members at Oshki Ogimaag Community School!

What is your role/title at Oshki Ogimaag Community School?

Interim Director and Ojibwe Language and Culture Instructor.

How long have you been working at Oshki Ogimaag Community School?

Two years.

What do you look forward to the most when coming to work each day?

Of course, I look forward to working with the wonderful students and staff at Oshki Ogimaag, however, my  favorite part of the day is hearing my students enter my classroom speaking Ojibwemowin!

Did you always know you wanted to work in education or how did you find this path?

When I was young, I didn't like high school. So, I set out to be that teacher that would be better at connecting with kids like myself. I believe after 30 plus years of teaching, I achieved that goal.

Anything about your family/special interests you would like to share?

  • Two years ago, I moved back home to Grand Portage  from the Twin Cities after teaching in Saint Paul for 30 years. I have a huge extended family in Grand Portage. I enjoy reconnecting with all of them.

  • In addition, I love running and hiking along the shore of Lake Superior.

Where is your favorite place to go in Cook County for a day of fun and relaxation?

Grand Portage is my favorite place to be. Many adventures can be found right here! A  leisurely walk to High Falls, more intense hike to Middle Falls, scenic drives, a day of fishing with friends!
