Senator David Tomassoni announced on Saturday that he will not seek re-election to another term in the Minnesota Senate. The senator will retire at the end of 2022.

The Chisholm native served in the Minnesota Senate for 21 years and was previously a member of the Minnesota House from 1993 to 2001.

"I am humbled by the opportunities folks gave me as their senator, and I extend my great appreciation to my constituents for entrusting me as their senator for 30 productive and rewarding years in public service," said Tomassoni. "I will miss serving as their senator, but I trust a new generation to keep the best interests of the proud and unique Iron Range at the forefront."

Tomassoni, who announced last year that he was diagnosed with ALS, said: "This neuro-degenerative disease is beginning to impair my ability to move and speak. However, I am fully carrying out my duties as Senator this legislative session."

One of his priorities this session will be to seek new funding for ALS research, with hopes of beating the disease in the future.
