From the Grand Marais Playhouse - February 7, 2022

The Grand Marais Playhouse is offering an extraordinary opportunity for area youth to learn about Theater Design and Technology. The class will learn the areas of technical theater from professionals in the field and then design and build the production of “We Will Rock You” young@part  which will be presented in June/July. 

Playhouse Director Sue Hennessy has gathered theater professionals from Set,Costume, Lights, Sound, Props and painting to join the class to share about their area of expertise and inspire the students as they embark on their design process. Scheduled to zoom into class are: Kaih Kayser, professional scene designer; Pam Knourek, Professor of Costume Technology, Co Director of Costume Design and Costume Technology ,N.C.School of the Arts; Bryan Duncan, Director of Campus Lights; Adjunct Instructor,Concordia College, Moorhead, MN; Doug Livesay, Audio Supervisor, Walker Arts Center, Jenny Knott, Professional Scenic Painter; Jon Erickson, Designer, Engineer, Master Artisan. The class will have instruction on Tuesdays and workshops time on Thursdays. The class will likely be extended after auditions for the show are competed. Participants will be invited to return to complete the build and load onto stage in June. 

Class fee is $100. Scholarships are available. Both ISD#166 and GES are covering the cost for its students using funding that comes from district ESSER funding for pandemic recovery efforts/programs including enrichment activities. 

“We Will Rock You” young@part is a musical featuring chart-topping Queen songs including “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” “Somebody To Love,” “We Are the Champions,” and many more, adaptation of the West End show follows two young rebels as they restore rock ‘n’ roll to “the iPlanet” in a post-apocalyptic world. WE WILL ROCK YOU Young@Part® is a musical for our time: a fist-pumping, foot-stomping anthem to individuality.
