Duluth fire crews responded to the report of smoke below I-35 Wednesday. They said the fire was near the Mesaba/Superior Street exit. Crews arrived around 1 p.m. and confirmed that no one was around the area.

According to police, witnesses reported to fire officials that many squatters had been camping under the structure where the fire originated. Officials said debris including a mattress, several pallets, and a variety of personal items was found beneath the structure.

By almost 2:30 p.m. the fire was completely out.  No injuries were reported.  Traffic was not impacted.

The Duluth Fire Department encourages those in need of shelter to use the services at CHUM located at 120 North 1st Avenue West. For hours and directions, head to their website.
