Last week we reported that former Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay was leaving his job as chief of police in Wichita, Kansas and moving back to Duluth. On Monday, Ramsay confirmed with WDIO News that while he isn't officially announcing it, he is considering running for St. Louis County sheriff.
The 49-year-old Duluth native served in the Duluth police department for nearly 20 years, leading the department as chief for the last ten years he was here. Ramsay has been police chief in Wichita, the largest police department in Kansas for the last six years but says he and his wife, Tracy and their two school aged kids are excited to be coming back home.
"I already bought a four-wheeler," the avid outdoorsman said. "When we came home to visit family this summer, our decision was made," he said with a smile on his face.
Regarding a possible run for St. Louis County sheriff in 2022, Ramsay said, "We decided to move back to Duluth even before we heard Ross Litman was not going to run for re-election, but I am a public servant at heart and I think it might be a really good fit."
The primary reason for moving back home, Ramsay said, is family. "My father is 90-years old and is battling lung cancer. It's a time in my life to be closer to my parents and to help them and enjoy being with them."
As for when a formal and official decision regarding a possible run for county sheriff might be made, Ramsay said, "I will be making my decision in the next month or two."
The only person to officially announce an intention to run in the 2022 sheriff's race is Dead on Arms gun store owner, Chad Walsh.
In the meantime Ramsay says he's looking forward to spending the holidays back home in the Northland with family and friends.
