Spooner WI Middle School to remain closed Friday; dozens treated after epoxy like odor
Nov 12, 2021 05:45AM ● By EditorSpooner Middle School will remain closed Friday as the school district works to determine the source of an issue that required dozens of students and staff to receive medical treatment on Wednesday, including two students sent to medical facilities out of the area.
The district says 24 students and 20 staff members received medical treatment after the school was evacuated on Wednesday morning. Their conditions were not released.
Though the district's initial statements had attributed an "epoxy-like odor" to construction on storm drains near the school, the most recent statement says the source of the issue has not been confirmed.
"At this time, the source of the irritant that made some students and staff members ill [Wednesday] has not been determined. While multiple carbon monoxide level tests show normal levels, the epoxy-like odor is still present in parts of the school," the district said Thursday afternoon.
The district said it is working with local officials and Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services.
"We ask that everyone joins us in sending well wishes for a prompt and full recovery of each of our students and staff members impacted by this incident," the district said in a press release issued Thursday morning.
Other Spooner schools remain open.
