The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) hopes to make some students’ walk or bike ride to school safer.  It’s all a part of their annual Safe Routes to School grant program.

The money helps school districts build infrastructure to improve access to school routes.  That can include trails along state highways or new dedicated school walking routes, and much more.  MnDOT leaders say whatever the money is used for, they hope it will help save lives.

“You know it can be expensive to make some improvements, whether paint markings or new pavements. Maybe it’s safe pedestrian crossings, and you hit a button, and lights happen; those can all be costly things for communities,” said Anne Meyer with MnDOT.

Since 2006 MnDOT has worked with more than 500 schools and communities in Minnesota to improve pedestrian safety in and around schools.  Districts can still apply for the grants, and the money will be awarded in February.
