As many people start to plan their holiday gatherings, the ongoing pandemic could create some tough conversations among family members with differing points of view.

An Associate Psychology Professor at the University of Wisconsin Superior, Professor Kenna Bolton Holz, said it's how you approach those conversations that are important.

"We'll have this conversation because we're curious and interested to understand each other's perspectives. I don't think it's a good idea to go into these conversations with an intention to try to influence somebody else in your family," Bolton Holz said.

Bolton Holz said families should start to schedule those conversations and establish healthy boundaries and respect personal decisions.

Rillis Eklund registered nurse with St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services said being nice goes a long way.

"The best way to handle that is just to be gentle, be kind, and to let people know that you really have their best intentions in mind," Eklund said.

Eklund said despite differing views on the vaccine, getting vaccinated is the best defense against contracting COVID-19.

Eklund added that improving ventilation in your gathering space, and avoiding crowded areas while wearing a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status, can also help everyone stay safe.

Bolton Holz said if family members aren't willing to do those things, to still be respectful and honor your boundaries.

"People don't have to like it, they may not like it but it's important to set the boundaries with what you're comfortable with," said Bolton Holz.
