It is one of the rarest of Northland weather events, but the National Weather Service is investigating a possible tornado in the BWCA in Cook County.

Recently, someone exploring the Boundary Waters near Clearwater Lake in Cook County stumbled onto major tree damage.

The damage likely occurred on October 10th, which was the first time Cook County had ever been under a Tornado Warning in October.

Joe Moore with the National Weather Service in Duluth said they did not go and survey the area in person due to its remoteness.

But now, through the help of new satellite imagery and aerial photographs provided by the Forest Service, he said it looks like a tornado likely caused the damage.

“We worked with the Forest Service who did a flight of the damage, which we’re waiting to see some images from them. We also looked at some satellite imagery which looked like there was a large area where trees fell down in a significant path where the storm tracked over,” said Moore.

Moore said the record warm temperatures on Lake Superior meant storms could stay together even as they approached the lake.
