A former manager at Fortune Bay Casino has been sentenced to prison for embezzling nearly $316,000.

Jennifer Boutto will serve eight months in federal prison and have to pay back the money she stole.

She had worked as the front desk supervisor, a position that allowed her to issue cash refunds without supervision. The U.S. District Attorney for Minnesota said she did that 2,994 times, stealing $315,739.87.

She pleaded guilty in March.

Fortune Bay is owned by the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa.

"Far too often crimes are committed against tribes in Indian Country and the punishment is a slap on the wrist," Bois Forte Tribal Chairwoman Cathy Chavers said. "Boutto serving time in federal prison reinforces the fact that crimes like these won't be tolerated."
