Weekly Conservation Officer Reports

District 6 - Two Harbors area - From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - Ocotober 18, 2021

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) spent time checking trout anglers on remote trout lakes, anglers in the BWCAW, and ATV riders. He checked small-game hunters, completed required training and followed up on bear-hunting investigations.

CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports warm and dry weather over the weekend made up for what had been a week of very low hunting activity as many hunters were checked making it out over the weekend. Success overall was fair, but spotty.

CO John Velsvaag (Ely #2) checked hunters and anglers this past week. Grouse hunting is slow, as is duck hunting. Fishing was spotty, with fewer but larger fish than the past couple of weeks. Velsvaag took several calls on the northern pike regulations and campfires.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked waterfowl and angling activity over the weekend. Warm weather continues to make outdoor activities a bit more enjoyable. Fall fishing has been good with some anglers catching some nice fish this late season. Illegal-deer-baiting investigations continue.

CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked area angling and boating activity. Time was also spent checking ATV trails and small-game hunters in the area.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports handling a few wildlife-related calls throughout the week. Quite a few grouse hunters were checked and Hill noticed an uptick in spruce partridge harvest. Hunters are encouraged to submit spruce grouse feather samples to the DNR for a genetics study. Information can be found on the DNR website. If you recall from Hill's report from last week, Hill contacted a few people illegally camping at a public access, along with illegally possessing drug paraphernalia. Hill returned to the access on Monday and found a pile of burned garbage. Lo and behold, Hill located a piece of burned garbage bearing the name of one of the campers. More citations were issued for illegally burning garbage and for litter.
