The Minnesota state fire marshal says most fire deaths take place at home. So having a plan to escape and meet up with your loved ones is critical. 

Alina Granholm is the install coordinator at Heritage Window and Door, but she has also served as a volunteer firefighter in Esko. She said fire safety comes up in her line of work. 

"It comes up because you'll go to somebody's house, and their windows will be painted shut or sealed shut because they think there's an air leak in there," Granholm said. "And that's just not OK because that's one of the ways you need to get out of your house." 

She said every room should have two escape routes: a door and at least one window. If anyone sleeps in the basement, it should be an egress window. 

"Make sure you don't have a bunch of stuff laying in front of doors and windows either because that will not only impede you getting out but the firefighters getting in," Granholm suggested. 

And she wants families to be sure to have a meeting spot so that everyone can be accounted for after a quick escape.
