This will be the last Greenwood Fire Fact Sheet from the MN Incident Command Team. Tomorrow, command of the fire will be transferred to the Superior National Forest. The Information Line and Email address above will not be monitored after 8pm on Oct. 1.
SUMMARY: Started by lightning, the Greenwood Fire was detected on August 15, 2021, at about 3:00 p.m. on the Laurentian Ranger District. The fire started approximately 10 miles southwest of Isabella. Maximum containment will peak at 80 percent, as wetland areas prevent crew and equipment from building containment lines in those areas.
CURRENT STATUS: There has been minimal fire activity over the past several days and several miles of containment lines remain secure, cold, and not active. Crews and equipment worked to repair the impacts of line construction and restore them to a near natural state to reduce the potential for erosion or other natural resource impacts. The suppression repair work that needed to be done has been completed. Any remaining heat has been well on the interior of the fire.
PLANNED ACTIONS: Crews will complete the last backhaul of equipment and supplies. Firefighters will monitor the remaining containment lines. Equipment and hand crews will repair any remaining sections of containment line and bring equipment and supplies out of the area while native grass seeding is finished. The final clean-up of larger trees and debris will be completed. The Incident Command Post and Base Camp at the Isabella Community Center will be cleaned up and prepared for turning back to the community today and tomorrow. All firefighting personnel and equipment will depart Isabella by Friday afternoon. Tomorrow, command of the fire will be transferred to the Superior National Forest and local fire management. Fire Crews from the Tofte Ranger District will monitor the fire condition daily.
WEATHER/FIRE BEHAVIOR: The weather today is expected to be mostly sunny and continued warm with temperatures in the high 70s degrees and minimum humidity levels of 50%. Winds will be 5 mph from the south. Fire behavior is still expected to be minimal.

CLOSURES: The Forest Service has a closure in place for the Greenwood Fire. All forest lands and roads within the closure area are closed. The closure is generally south of Highway 1 near the Greenwood Fire perimeter including the Sand Lake Recreation Area and rustic campground, a portion of the Jackpot Trail loop, McDougal Lake area and all associated recreation areas and the Stony River Observation Point. Little Isabella Campground will also remain closed due to bear issues and rehabilitation.
