Weekly Conservation Officer Reports

Aug 02, 2021 02:45PM ● By Editor
District 6 - Two Harbors Area - From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - August 2, 2021

CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) fielded several wildlife-related complaints involving nuisance bears and wolves. He also patrolled areas of the BWCA and although activity was very high, boating and angling compliance was good. Violations included angling with no license in possession, failure to display current registration, and no life-saving device on board a watercraft.

CO John Velsvaag (Ely #2) followed up on bear-related complaints and fishing violations from last week. He also answered calls about fire restrictions and closures in and around the BWCA. He also checked several accesses after complaints of illegal camping, fires and litter.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) spent time checking ATV riders, AIS and anglers. Remote trout lakes were worked and nuisance-animal calls were handled.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) patrolled area forests, campgrounds and boat accesses to check for fire-restriction compliance. She also took a nuisance-bear complaint and checked anglers, boaters and ATV operators. Manning attended the funeral for Montgomery Police Officer Bryan Tupy as part of the DNR Honor Guard.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked invasive species enforcement and on the local fires. Enforcement action was taken for transporting a watercraft with the drain plug in place and transporting aquatic vegetation.

CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked area angling and boat activity. Time was spent in Thief River Falls as well.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports working in the BWCA the entire week. Heavy traffic was seen, but Hill is happy to report only a few no-license-in-possession violations were detected. The walleye woes are continuing for anglers as some intermittent 12- and 13-inch fish have been caught. Smallmouth bass continue to dominate the bag. Hill stopped a 13-year-old for riding a very long wheelie in the roadway on an ATV. Hill escorted the juvenile home and had a talk with mom. Assistance was also given to other local agencies.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked angling and ATV activity during the week. Lake Superior fishing was good when calm conditions prevailed on the big lake. Recent storms in the area dropped several trees on forest roads and trails, making access to remote areas difficult. Enforcement action was taken for burning violations.
