Project 61: Latest MN DOT update on Grand Marais road construction

Jul 09, 2021 01:01PM ● By Editor
From the Minnesota Department of Transportation - July 9, 2021

The Hwy 61 Grand Marais project is progressing well over the last couple of weeks. The last of the major underground utilities for the current Phases 2A (3rd to Broadway) and 2C (8th to 3rd lake side) were wrapped up, which allowed sub-cutting and backfill of the road core to occur.

That has allowed curb and gutter to be installed in Phase 2A over the last couple of days, and curb and gutter in Phase 2C will be following shortly.

Mainline paving will be starting next week with 2A getting paved first, as well as continued concrete work for all of the sidewalk and pedestrian ramps.
Please contact us with any questions.
Important reminders for motorists regarding work zone safety:
  • Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate through with care and caution.
  • Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
  • Watch for workers and slow moving equipment.
  • Obey posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
  • Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
  • Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
