Cook County and Grand Portage WIC would like to announce an artist grant! 

Our clinics work to promote, support, and protect breast-/chestfeeding as an infant’s first food, with the knowledge that optimal early nutrition has lifelong protective effects. Helping to prevent diabetes, obesity, cancer, and infant death, breastfeeding plays an essential role in correcting the racial health disparities endemic in our communities. 

Breastfeeding promotion that focuses solely on the medical advantages of breastfeeding misses an opportunity to explore what it might mean to recover a rich tradition of breastfeeding after collective trauma and generations of family separation, cultural genocide, and reproductive exploitation. Engaging honestly in these conversations and amplifying voices of people of color is at the core of the project in which you are invited to participate.

Our clinics are collaborating to offer two artist commissions of $2,200 each to promote equity in lactation. Minnesota artists of color are invited to submit proposals by a July 25thdeadline. We invite submissions proposing an original work engaging with personal or cultural significance of breast- and chestfeeding for display at our clinics from late August to late September, 2021.
