With Independence Day this weekend, many are getting excited to see the fireworks displays on the Fourth of July.
And the Duluth Fire Department launched their Chalk it Up Campaign to promote fun and fireworks safety this weekend. Each July 4th there are several fireworks related injuries reported in Minnesota and 40 percent are children.
So this campaign asked participants to get creative and use chalk to draw their favorite fireworks display or memories. Then take a picture of your fireworks chalk drawing and send it to the fire department's Facebook page to possibly win some prizes from them in this competition.
"I hope that they will explore their creative side, I hope there will be some friendly competition amongst people, trying to challenge their neighbors,” said DFD Deputy Chief of Life Safety Jon Otis.
Deputy Chief Otis says having people talk about fireworks safety with their kids is a great way to prevent injuries. And also talking to your neighbors to find out if they have bad experiences to unexpected fireworks going off.
