We have entered the season of barbeques and the Duluth Fire Department wants to remind you to be safe while grilling.

Firefighters recommend that people grill outside, on a stable surface away from structures.

“It is best to keep grills at least ten feet away from structures,” Jeremy Lopez, a firefighter with the Duluth Fire Department said.

Additionally, firefighters say to never leave a lit grill unattended and to always keep a fire extinguisher nearby to extinguish a potential fire. 

“Always remember not to use water on a grease fire,” Lopez said. "This can be caused by bigger pieces of meat."

Grills should also be cleaned frequently, but they can stay hot for up to an hour after use, so give it some time to cool down first.

"Maintaining grill maintenance as far as cleaning your grill-- whether its two, three times a year or if you're really ambitious, maybe its after every use," Lopez said.

Clothes can also catch fire, so firefighters recommend people avoid wearing loose clothing while grilling.
